HALEY BATES / TERESA REDDEN / MI WU
SNOW WHITE / STERLING SILVER
February 9 - March 10, 2007
Opening, February 8, 6-8 PM
Conversation with Teresa Redden & Mi Wu, Saturday, Feb 17, Noon.
Catherine Person Gallery is proud to announce an exhibition featuring
contemporary sculpture by Haley Reneé Bates, Teresa Ilene Redden and an
installation by Mi Wu.
Haley Bates sculpture utilizes preexisting forms that share a background
of utility and functional design. Her work in this show focuses on altered
sterling silver spoons. Reflecting her interest in surgical procedures
Redden’s Internalization series involves careful alteration of spoons. The ongoing
series explores themes of hybridization, abstraction, and functional excess through the
lens of surgical practice, by methods of piercing, sawing and filing. With the
Externalization series, added silver components are a natural outgrowth of each
sculptural spoon, using traditional forging and fabrication techniques.
Bates is based in Colorado, and has an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan.
The miniature sculpture by Seattle artist Teresa Redden is a testimony to perfection and patience. Delicate and vulnerable, the intimately scaled work invites the viewer to get close, slow down and pause. The work turns the simple medium of white paper into the truly astonishing. Each sculpture is small enough to fit in the palm of one’s hand, yet is so intricate to make that it takes the artist a minimum of 160 hours to complete. Redden has an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art.
Northwest artist Mi Wu created an installation of three 90" symmetrical works made of flour directly on the gallery’s vintage maple floor. Wu’s installation is a metaphor for the life cycle, going from nothing, to existence, to vanishing. Mi has an MFA from Northern Illinois University and is an instructor of sculpture and ceramics at Edmonds and Bellevue Community Colleges.
